Chapter Five
I slammed my body to the left. My elbows hit the floor first, followed by my torso and then my knees. I heard the whoosh of weapons charging. Yells sounded from behind me, then heat. Lots and lots of fucking heat. I covered my head. The blast was so loud my ear drums seemed to explode. I growled as the world around me went silent. When the scorching hot turned into a warm pulse around me, I struggled to my feet. My head was a bit fuzzy as I turned around. Sure enough, the steel door was fused to the arch opening almost completely. A few spaces made me hightail my ass out of harm’s way. Then I saw our getaway ride. “A fucking Mover?” These things were made for transporting large equipment, not speed or stealth. We’d never fucking get away in one of these. I ran to the open door and shoved myself inside. It closed on its own as I fell against the wall. It was one big area for cargo and equipment, one door that led to the energy core, and a few stairs that led to the flight controls.
The ship lurched backward and I stumbled to my knees. I still couldn’t hear a fucking thing as we made our escape.
I sat in the co-pilot seat with a sigh. After crawling up the stairs and plopping down, I finally felt my body start to relax. That explosion had been close. My ears were still ringing, but at least I could hear again. “What’s the plan, Lavender? Are we going to take them on the slowest space chase in history?” I asked as we scampered out the bay’s opening. Stars littered the area around us but all were too far away to help us. The ship was going at its top speed, about the same as an earth snail. At this point, we’d be better off ejecting and floating through space. It wouldn’t be long before they broke through that door and came after us.
“Asteroid belt,” Lavender said.
I glanced over at him. He looked fucking adorable. His teeth were nibbling on his bottom lip, and his posture was rigid as he flew the ship. It wasn’t as if they could hit anything flying through space at this speed. I tried to get my head working, the bigger one, and despite rumors, that was not the one between my legs. “What belt?” I glanced around. The only remotely close planet looked like a dead moon. Sure enough, as I squinted I could see the start of an asteroid belt. Hundreds, if not thousands, of irregularly shaped objects were just floating around waiting to get hit. Some of them were big enough to give us cover. It might work. “And then what? Say we make it through the area and hide behind an asteroid…then what? Are we going to sit around and fuck while they get bored and move on?” I liked the fucking idea, but the chance of them just moving on after a few days wasn’t likely.
